FREEZING WEATHER
If your pool is equipped with a freeze guard you are protected and there is nothing else to do. If not manually turn all your pumps on for the duration of the freeze.
POWER OUTAGE
Materials Needed: Blankets, Phillips Screw-Driver, Channel Locks, & Foam Fun Noodles.
1) Turn-Off Power
Go to the breaker box or sub panel and turn off all breakers that go to your pool equipment. This way the pool does not start up when the power turns back on.
2) Pumps
Depending on brand pumps have (1) or (2) drain plugs at the lower portion of the pump pot, this is the front of the pump. Remove these plugs and lids. The pool cleaner drain plug is at the very front and there is only one. No lid on the cleaner pump to remove, just the one plug.
3) Chlorinator
All models - Remove lid.
Jandy Duo - Remove cartridge, Remove Lid from tablet side, remove drain plug
4) Backwash Valve (For DE Filters Only)
Set Multiport dial to “Backwash”.
If you have a Slide valve (Push-Pull) raise halfway.
5) Filter
Engage air relief valve (just twist till you hear the air hiss, leave open) on top of the filter.
Remove the 4” drain cap at the bottom.
7) Raised Spas (Elevated from Pool Level)
Raised spas have a check valve at the bottom portion of the Spa Return pipe. Remove the screws with a Phillip’s to remove the cap. The spa will equalize (drain) to the pool level. Spa return valves need to be open.
8) Heater
At the lowest point of the heater on the same side as where the pipes are is a drain plug. Remove.
9) Pool Shell & Skimmer Mitigation
The following is to protect the pool shell and skimmers in the event of surface freezing. Anything that has “play”, (pliability) will help. Foam fun noodles, firewood, empty plastic bottles with lids screwed on. Throw them in the pool and spa. No right or wrong way here as long as it floats. This way the squeeze from the ice goes to the items you threw in the pool and not the shell and or skimmers. Placing an item in the skimmer throat and or throats is best practice. Thread a fun noodle from the pool, through the skimmer throat, and then stick it out of the skimmer lid. The end look is a fun noodle sticking out from your deck.
