GOAL: To acquire sample tiles"Tile Color 2002V Mosa 2" x 24" & 4" x 24" & test for conformity to ANSI A137. 1 This standard defines porcelain tile as an impervious tile with a water absorption of 0.5% or less, as measured by the ASTM C373 test method. Weston Pools is prepared to pay for this test method as a public service and has been denied by Knox Tile of Dallas.
Mosa Tile is a tile manufacture in the Netherlands. None of their products are marketed toward the waterline swimming pool market on their website. Knox Tile in Dallas is the only Vendor for the pool tile in DFW. They sell their "Terratones" line as a pool tile with a "Tile Council of America" absorption certification.
As per Mosa Tile "Important note and disclaimer”
"Façade application, cladding, or similar: Mosa tiles have not been tested, nor approved, for exterior façade application (traditional or ventilated/rainscreen), outdoor cladding, or similar applications in the United States. Among other things, the installation of Mosa tiles in these applications can lead to a failure of the bonding to the structure onto which the tiles are attached due to possible moisture intrusion. Mosa will not be held liable for any Mosa tiles installed or used in exterior façade applications, as outdoor cladding, or in similar applications, nor of any damages resulting from failure to heed the foregoing warnings. Use of Mosa tiles in any of the foregoing applications will void all otherwise applicable warranties. If more information is required, please contact us."
Knox tile is the sole distributor for Mosa tile sold for pool applications in the Dallas market. Mosa Terratones is on a pool that I personally service and care for. I do not believe this tile meets the required less than .05% required absorption rate required by ANSI. The following companies and or Non-Profits have failed to be transparent with me. The following statements are made and can be verified in the email PDF's on this page.
1) The American Tile Association will not share lab tests for Mosa Tile without written permission. Mosa tile was asked and did not grant permission.
2) Knox tile has been emailed twice and visited in person once. All three times my request for tiles has been ignored. I have even offered to pay for them as opposed to the traditional samples given under ordinary conditions.
Below are PDF copied email threads demonstrating (3) separate requests for tile samples. All ignored.
Below are tile examples of Mosa Terratones showing gray stains. I have proven through field testing that the tile is allowing subsurface staining. The negative edge spa at the bottom of the page is under my care. It had the stains removed with a product called Biodex 300. The pools appear to have the same stains as the other Mosa examples captured from the web.
